Create your own dedicated game server
I though it was enough to place the guide to create your own dedicated game server on Top Game Sites. But apparently not all of you have seen it so you ask me through this site as well. It's not easy to answer all support mails and especially if they are full of questions not regarding the site. This is why I have created these little guidelines for you. Creating a dedicated game server is not always as easy to execute a file. Dedicated servers require settings, tweaking and good hardware to work properly. Of course I can't teach you all of that in this text but I will point you in the right direction.

When you have decided to start your own game server, you will have to choose between hosting the server at home with your internet connection or renting a gaming server. If you have decent connection at home, you will be able to host a game server without any problems as long as you buy the correct hardware. Choosing hardware for your server is not always that easy. I would not recommend buying expensive server processors like Xeon or Opterons -series. These processors are Dual-Cores optimized for servers but you will not need that (as long as you don't want to spend your money on good Dual-Core processors). I would recommend buying a Core 2 Duo (Dual Core) from Intel ore the new Kentsfield core that is a Quad-Core processor. With that I would go with at least 1GB to start with, you will need at least 2 GB sooner or later so if you have the money you can buy them from the beginning.

But why go with Dual-Cores or Quad-Cores for my server?
Many emulators today, especially those for MMORPG games support multiple processors/cores. This will speed up the server dramatically. Some emulators for FPS games do not support this but most admins I have spoken to recommend it anyway. Stats and multiple servers can be run without interfering with each other. That's why you should pick at least a Dual-Core for your dedicated server.

Why should I rent a server?
Games use a lot of bandwidth in both directions. If you are hosting a game server on a poor/unstable internet connection, then the players will have a bad gaming experience and leave your server. This is hopefully something you don't want. By renting the server you will get the latest hardware, like the Core 2 Duo Dual Cores or the AMD X2 or Opteron series (Both Dual-Cores). You will also be hosted on very fast internet connection, and the rest of the hardware like hard drives will probably be fast SCSI disks or Raptor disks.

You will also be able to get support and have a great uptime for your server. I recommend you going for this if you can't host it at home.

When you have the server, search for an emulator at Google if needed and start setting up your server. There are multiple forums that can help you with your server and the progress to create your own server from here.
